I have chosen repetition because the idea of continuos patterns within an image is a interesting concept and I think that I would be able to create a good repetition styled photograph. I'am starting to get a few ideas of what I want to do in repetition and I want to explore all corners of repetition for example I want to look at stuff like Maurizio Galimberti and his use of repeated images or try to look at something I haven't seen yet so i can make my own unique photograph
Maurizio galimberti
Maurizio Galimberti was born in Como, Italy in 1956 and grew up in Meda. He spent most of his working hours on construction sites, which sparked his interest in architecture. For most of his work as a younger man he won many photography competitions for his precise and careful work. Most of his work was on a Widelux camera but in 1983 he found his new camera interest the Polaroid camera, he likes to use the camera because he doesn't have to waste time in the dark room which scares him, he also liked the polaroid because of the bright vibrant colours that where infused into his images contrasting his old style work of black and white photographs. I think the vintage look is better than the more modern look giving a different feeling with in an image it also make it look like the image has history behind it, I sometimes like to experiment with different photo editing softwares to have mt colour all different colours
Out of the images I had this is my favourite because of the vibrancy of the images together, but also the look of how the image moves down from an old venetian building to the venetian bridge, I really like the look of how the photo has been edited to create a vibrant summer look, Im hoping to have my images similar to this but not in every photo shoot. I want to first experiment then create an image which looks more like this one. To take these images Maurizio clearly used an old camera which I can use or I can edit the image in something like photoshop to create a similar look

Peter de lory
Peter De Lory grew up in cape cod and began taking photographs of landmarks around him. Due to his sand filled home town he gained interest in the style of the american west on his way to school, the landmark photos where the foundation for his later photography carer, you can even see how the photos above are inspired by landmark styled photography.
This photo by Peter De Lory is a simple repeated pattern of trees, it seems like a very mysterious photo because of how the island which he is on seems so empty and quite creepy. An interesting thing about the photograph is the fact that from the foreground to background there is what looks like a straight narrow line straight down the middle if the photograph, this line leads you to an island that is clearly very similar to the one De Lory is on which creates a repetition
For me the most interesting part of this photograph is the lane in the middle which is created by the trees, I don't know why I find this part of the picture so interesting but the lane which is created draws me in and almost creates a hypnotic affect
I think that this photograph can help me create more images with a repeated pattern so I will try to do an experiment in which I try to include photos styled like this and if i feel they work then I can add them to a set which could be for a final image.

Étienne-Jules Marey
Étienne-Jules Marey was a french scientist who studied blood circulation in the human body and other things such as the analysation of the heart beat, muscles and respiration, he also was interested in the movement of human bodies which later helped him study different animals and insects, because of this interest he was able to then look at the pattern of movement through photography which later developed into animated photography which was then put into a type of chronophotography. He then went on to think of how his revolutionary idea of how he could take several images onto one surface to capture movements which he later used in his book Le Vol des Oiseaux (the flight of birds)
He also created a revolutionary camera which was the chronophotography gun which was able to take 12 frames a second and then putting them all onto the same image. This is was he used to study the many different movements of dogs, cats, monkey and horses. Étienne also made films at 60 shots per second and of high quality, for these reason he is a pioneer of photography and camera work for modern day times

This photograph by Étienne-Jules Marey demonstrates on of his scientific experiments about cat always being able to land on their feet for this he used his chronophotography gun to capture all the movements of a cat as it falls towards the ground. I find this image interesting since it shows movements not many people see since cats are quick while they move and to see how the cats body almost transforms and morphs from a small ball to a normal looking cat on the ground
After looking at this image I want to try and have a similar looking photograph to this so I could use photoshop to merge images together since I don't have access to a chronophotography gun, I could also try using a normal camera and changing the shutter speed to create multiple images in one but I need to find a subject to base my photographs on. |
gray malin
Gray Malin is an american fine arts photographer who's main work is based around aerial birds eye view shots of landmarks and beaches around the world , which are filled with many different vibrant and bright colours. When he moved to Hollywood to start an internship at Paramount, he started to sell his photographs at a small swap meet near his home
I really like this image from Gray Malin because it is a prime example of a good repetition styled photograph, most of his images a like this with its repeated pattern and repeated vibrancy of colour. I like the fact that the repetition of the image is broken and distorted by the woman sitting on the blue inflatable ring, I like it since it changes the colour but not the pattern and still continues the theme of repetition, I also like the woman's placing and theme since she is surrounded by the blue of her book and ring but once again the repetition is broken by her hat which look similar to the yellow rings used.
After looking at this I now think about how I could create an aerial shot of a repeated pattern or maybe mixing in another photographers work for example I could incorporate the style of Étienne-Jules Marey and have an aerial shot of a multiple exposure maybe matching the colours of having the same person in the shots but with different colours on them to break and distort the theme of repetition while still having that theme with the person in the frame 3 or more times

Andreas gursky
Andreas Gursky is a german visual artist who is most famous for his work with landscape and architecture colour photography in which he mainly uses a high view point, in his younger years he was professionally trained by Bernd and Hilla Beecher who influenced his architectural photography. He also uses a wide range of computer softwares to edit his images so that his subjects seems wider and larger than their actual size.
I really like this image since it show the many different objects that are found within a normal shop, the main thing I find interesting is the fact that I don't know if this was all set up to look how it does or if some really does have their shop in such a repeated pattern. I also like how all of the colours are repeated starting in the foreground into the background and how this continuous pattern goes on in the whole image. Its really hard to tell if this image has been edited to look like this, the effect of the photo is so surreal that it becomes a questionable photograph. It would be hard for me to create such a repetition on a large scale like this but I might be able to go somehwere
This is my first experiment and I decided to have a similar look to all the photos like Maurizio Galimberti's photos of the venetian bridge, which was an image which really inspired me when thinking about my first photo shoot. For my first photo shoot I wanted a lot of noise in the images and so to do this the best way was to capture images of movement and I knew that my dogs play fighting would jump around and make a lot of noise within the image. I did have more images but out of all of them these where best images I could use. As a first photo shoot I really like these images and how the repetition of colour and movement are found within them.
I really want to try again at taking similar photographs, I might take another set of my dogs play fighting but maybe next time a different setting for the images and a different colour to make them more vibrant. I think taking the images in my back garden when the sun is out would make these images better as this set where shot at nighttime making the vibrant look I wanted less affective.

this attempt at repetition has helped me get a better understanding of what style I like. At first I wasn't to sure on what I could take pictures of and so I decided I would take a picture of something that look the same and in school the building and its design is very repetitive itself and so it was easy for em to have a picture that I was able to branch ideas from. All the images are in black and white since I plan to have 1 set black and white then another in colour and I will continue this throughout my sets of images creating a repetition with in all of the images.
In these images i decided to have two in colour making them look different, I wanted some a little different so that I could get a better look a coloured images instead of the black and white images I have continuously taken but then again I am doing repetition, but I don't want to always have black and white images so my next aim is to have coloured images. In this set I mainly focused on lines within the images and how most objects that are similar all line up to create a whole object, I also look at the similarity in objects so that the whole collection of images create a repetition
these are small experiments I tired while looking at how I could create a repetition collection. The artist who gave me inspiration was Maurizio Galimberti, I attempted to recreate the similar look of photos in the collection, I think it worked well since I was able to find an easy subject to toy with while experimenting, although a lot of them do look like the sae image at closer inspection you can tell that the images are different showing that they work well by having this similar look has the collection similar to Galimberti.
This set of images where slightly inspired by Gray Malin, I tried to replicate his photographs with the repetition pattern and colour change. I wanted to have the same object to create the repetition but I wanted the colour different to match how Malin changes it, the photographs could have bee taken a lot better and differently which is something i aim to do; To improve these I could change where I take them so I'm thinking of going out side to take them but having a plain back ground or a blurred background so the attention remains on the small jars. The main ones I like are the ones which have the lids taken off and are lined up, I like this since the composition has worked well with in the image. After spending time looking at the images and different processes I can do to change them I decided to use two and photo shop them
final piece 1 idea: blur/layered images
final piece 1 refined and finished
For this set of images I wanted them as my final piece but I saw there was something that didn't work within the images so to start I went on photoshop to develop them. I decided to change these images since I thought that by themselves unedited, they can be boring and dull, since they theme was repetition I decided to layer the same image on top to create even more of a repeated them or pattern. The picture of the single jar with the blue ink inside started off as a repeated photo in a collection, but I saw how by itself it doesn't create that much of a repeated affect and so I wanted the image to become more interesting and different to the others in its collection. For me it was slightly hard to chose the right images for this collection. Another hard choice was finding the right images to layer, to make up my mind I look at images that might not have been as interesting as others for example the picture of the railing in the stair case was very plain and simple but after I edited it as a test I ended up liking the image and look of the layered/blurred effect. Another change I made to the images was changing the brightness and contrast since the images show more detail after the changing them in photoshop.
how i created the blur/ layer effect
To create this blur affect I took screen shots to show steps on how I edited this image. To start off I opened my image in photoshop, I then opened a new plain background which was the same size as my original photograph, After that I copied and pasted the image 3 or two times depending on what image I was using, I then changed the opacity of the image to create the see through effect and moved them around into certain positions to change the images composition with the new layers, once I was happy with the image I flattened the layers; Flattening the layers into the image causes it to be one whole solid image as shown in the pictures above, I then repeated the process on the other images and uploaded them to my website
final piece 2 idea : multi shot
This final piece was inspired by Étinne-Jules Marey and his work on movement, I wanted to re-create the fascinating and crazy look that his photographs have, I would like to of had different movements but the space I had was very limited so if I was able to find somewhere with more room and which I can make dark then I will but for the mean while I'am very happy with the final result of my multiple exposure shot. To take these photos I set the aperture to 8, the ISO to 100 and the shutter speed on 10 and 15, I changed it at some point to see the difference and give the subject in the photo more time to move about and give them a chance to do more making the image look slightly more hectic. At one point the side of the light changed which explains why in some of the photos start to fade more and more, although I could have re-taken them so the subject was clear all the way through I didn't really want to since I liked this effect and almost caused the sunject to look like a ghost playing around in the dark. after looking at these I can tell that I should try using more light within the image or maybe have the light facing the person as they walk
For this experiment I decided to include lights so that I could use light painting in multi exposure shots to see if the images would work for repetition. At first I tried to draw out the same pattern and realised this didn't work so then I experimented with the flash from the camera to create a multi shot while including the different patterns, me and the sunject tried different actions to see what ones worked well with in the photograph
Final piece 2 refined and finished
I chose these images for my second final piece since, I think that they worked best out of all my multi exposure shot photographs. I decided to add the first one since it is a really creepy and ghostly photograph, I created this by having the subject shine two lights on each side of his face in different positions to create a floating head look, I also wanted a different look to my multiple exposure shots and I think this helped me create a photograph which i haven't seen before; I first notice I could do this when I was taking a photograph using the flash and having my subject do what they had done but I had their body revealed and so I decided to not use the flash showing their body. I chose to have the other two since they where the best out of my multi exposure shot experiments, they worked best since the subject is more visible and not as transparent as the other images.
final evaluation
For unit 2 I chose to do the work on repetition I wasn't to sure on what photographs I could take so I started looking on Pinterest and at examples of photographers that I was given, at first I couldn't relate my work to any of the photographers in my first photo shoot which was of my dogs moving and playing I decided to add the same coloured filter on my phone to all of the images to create a coloured repetition on the images, I wasn't really happy with the outcome of the images and so I wanted to try a different way of looking at repetition and so I looked at repetition within architecture.
