Chiaroscuro is Italian for light and dark a element that has been used throughout history starting with painters in early centuries for example the painting of the old woman and young boy the artist uses the candle light to brighten the old woman and young boys face and the use of shade in the clothes that their wearing but as the image goes further up it turns completely dark creating a contrast of light and dark
for these photos we had the camera's exposure around 2 and 3 to have the right amount of light on the persons face and not to much on the background. Every now and then we moved the light and dimmed it so the light would be concentrated on the person within the photo ADD MORE
Edward weston's image of this pepper uses contrast in a way which forms the image. Just by looking at this image you can tell where weston had put the light which is on the right hand side of the pepper you can tell this because there are brighter and shiny parts of the pepper on the right hand side and gradually getting slightly darker as it gets to the left hand side of the image
Tom Hunter- Persons unknown
This is the collection of tom hunters persons unknown it shows the squatters that he shared a house with but in the images he uses chiaroscuro to bring out the life and colour of the people but also showing the sadness for example the woman with the baby is reading her possession just like all of the people received. hunter wanted to show the people in private moments to show what they were like
For these images we where told to take our images using natural daylight to form contrast (light and dark). For most of these images I used the sunset to help bring out more light and shadow with in the images. I like having the slight orange look of the sunset that is within the images for example the picture of the sun and tree in the park I like the parting of the clouds that almost looks like as if there is a conflict between light and dark and in the foreground of the image having the dark grass forming contrast within the image.
Elliot Erwitt
In this image Elliot Erwitt toys with contrast spreading light and dark around the foreground and background. In the foreground he uses the small dog and the floor around it to create a contrast of light and dark, by having the dog create a shadow on the ground and having the light surrounding it. In the centre of the image there is what seems to be a black lamp post, which is surrounded by the light in the image being the sky and floor which creates another contrast within the image.
Yasuhisa Furusato
This image was taken by Yasuhisa Furusato and I have chosen his image because of the simple formality of the image that stands out to me, having a simple black and white contrast gives this image a dark and weary affect and that is why I like this image, its a simple image piecing black and white together well.Having the image taken at night time helps the image stand out to me because its not just the lines in the road that create the contrast, its the street lights that go further and further into the background loosing focus this affect on the image almost makes me feel as if i'm trapped with no escape
This image is also taken by Yasuhisa Furusato. this image is the complete opposite since it gives the affect of freedom because of the biker in the road. I like the mix of black an white in the image. Having the white line then the black shoe and white t shirt is almost like a transformation from light to dark from each side having the white empowering the black
Marcin Ryczek
This image from Marcin Ryczek is a powerful image having the man in the distance surrounded by the foggy atmosphere it causes the image to become creepy and mysterious. The contrast in this image is once again black and white which is created by the railing and man being the black and the fog being the white. For me the mystery of this image is where it is you don't know if its by the sea or just in a very high place. The creepy affect makes it feel as if there is someone behind you following you and i think it looks as if the man is walking with speed as if he is trying to get away from someone or something.
I really like this image because of the conflict between light and dark and how the split between them is a straight line through the centre of the image. I also like how there is dark on the light and light on the dark but look at the swans who are the light are also surrounded by dark duck and one of the looks to be fighting them off creating another conflict of light and dark within the image.
Daido Moriyama
|
My plan for taking photos will be inspired by daido moriyama having my images edited in black and white having a viginette on the border of the image. I really like his style of photos since they have a strange gloomy effect to them which for some reason interests me and inspires me to take more images in black and white but to also photograph the people and things in the world since his style of photography shows a different light onto how i see things when I am trying to take a photo.

My Photos
In the set of images I have focused on my dogs and how I can use them to take a picture in the style of Daido Moriyama. First I got the dogs to stay still so i could then get close up images and full body. After taking the photos i looked at Daido Moriyama's pictures and saw how they had a main focus of light around the "models" face and a vignette around the edges, but it wasn't a dark vignette all the time in some images the exposure could change the image causing it to become a lot brighter than others and so I have edited some images darker than others to make my photos the same style as Daido Moriyama
with the two images of the roses I had trouble deciding how I would edit the images if I would make them black and white or if I would edit them to become more vibrant but after a while I decided that in black and white with ha higher contrast made the image look better. i decided to take pictures of the roses since moriyama looks at what is around him and tries to concentrate precisely on the detail of objects or people so i think by having the close up image and the full shot pictures show a difference in detail between the two
with this photo wasn't sure on which one i preferred so i decided to upload both of them. i like the dark affect that the buildings have in the photo but i also like the colour in the unedited picture since the sun glares into the camera with its yellow orangey affect.
I named this collection This life because I wanted to show what people have around them, and what they can do with normal day things and to see what is in the world for example things around me are my friends and dogs. I didn't want to just show my life I wanted to show the different life of other things such as the swans when I photographed them they where eating and I wanted to show them in their natural habitat eating and getting on with what they do. I also included my dogs since it showed their life and what they got up to which is mainly sitting around and sleeping i wanted to show this as it shows a life separate to my own but having it so close to me and how we are so different. With the two photos that are in the night I wanted to show a different life style so i thought of foxes and what they see when they come out at night I wanted to have a first person view of a fox to give a certain affect. I took the photos of my friends riding their bikes since I wanted to also show what I see when I'm out with them and what we get up to and I showed them messing around on the ramp.
These set of images where taken over the holiday.I was going to upload the originals by themselves but after editing them i liked how they turned out so i uploaded the originals and the edited to show the difference .With the edited twister ride photo I cropped it then change the brightness and I even brightened the clouds more than the ride using photoshop I done this so that the photo has more of contrast this time with light and dark although I have a contrast on the original being the lights and many different colours.

In this set of images I have decided to take the image in more of a full/ half body photo since the last set were close ups i though i could change it by having more that 1 person in an image and the people being further into the background. by having this style in more of my images like Daido Moriyamas images since he also has full body pictures with one or two people.
this is my first set of images that I have tried to based around Daido Moriyama. i think that having the exposure changed on the image makes it look more like Moriyama's images asa you can see above my images they have a similar look so for my first images i'm happy that I was able to have them be so successful. I took the images on my mobile phone and edited them on the phone I didn't use an app I just used the editing software that is in my phone. I changed the contrast in some of the images but not by much I also made shadows stand out more on some as well to create the dark and gloomy effect that Moriyama has within his images.
This is a short film which I made

Final piece
Final Evaluation
For my final piece I have chosen these images since a lot of them contrast each other so well. When taking these images I had the photographer Daido Moriyama in mind since he is the main inspiration for my work when I first looked a his worked I was so intrigued by what he had done and so while taking these photos I looked at them in a way I have never looked at photography for example what my boundaries where when taking them like the pictures of the swan I knew I could disturb them so I tried to be as quiet as I could so i wouldn't scare them off or be attacked by them. when taking the photos of my dogs I wasn't just thinking of how they could sit or look at me, I thought about how I could get closer or further away and how I can use the light to my advantage when capturing the photos. The two photos at night time where simply out of interest on how they would look, the one on the wet road was around 1 o'clock in the morning I was putting away my brothers moped when I had noticed the glare from the street lights and I instantly thought of daido moriyama and how I could compare this photo to his work so i captured and edited it.
I think that the photos i have taken look really good and I think they work well together. when taking the photos I liked to take my time with them since I wanted to try and capture a well composed photo the picture of the swans took around half an hour because I was trying to capture good photos so I took time to study the swans and their movements and how they went about their time doing normal things and for me it was a different photography experience being so close to them when trying to capture some images.
Over time the photos have changed since every time I edit a photo I now always change the exposure and contrast within the images where as some of my old photos I would just change the colour and one other thing now i'm looking at every aspect of the image and how changing the exposure can change the ways it looks being good or bad and I like this because I can now look at a photo and improve what I have done
Over all the work of Daido Moriyama and others I am now able to look at the world with contrast and other aspects of photography in mind. I can now also take a photo multiple times and chose one that has something different about it. I know now to keep improving my image and work to get results that make me happy. I have decided to pair the images together so I have another type of contrast. I think by having them paired in a certain way can show the difference in what surrounds us. When framing my final piece I will pair them differently to how they are in the gallery above and upload a photo on my website showing how I have paired them. I paired two sets of images together since they contrast each other as a whole image I think this works well since the many different tones in one set get toned down by the black and white photos they are paired with creating and equal contrast between them.
